I just wrote to ALL my reps, demanding the disbanding of ICE. They are out of control & running on chaos. We cannot risk another situation like the one in Minnesota (& you know there will be one), not to mention further disgrace in the eyes of the world. How much more do they think the voters can stand?
They’re playing a game of chicken. They’re basically saying: “So what are you going to do about it?”
As much as I am against violence, and for sure I don’t believe that people should respond with violence, I’m convinced that it will only get worse until a mayor or preferably a governor orders/authorizes their state law enforcement to use force to protect their residents. That will lead to 1 of 2 outcomes:
Feds realize they’re in an unwinnable position and the whole ICE chaos ends.
Trump orders feds + military to respond with force. This would lead to a national reckoning (not by way of violence/civil war) and would actually force the GOP in an untenable position that leads to actual impeachment + removal.
If this does not happen, they will simply continue to escalate in force until they’re building concentration camps to throw even Americans in because they’re “domestic terrorists” just like Nicole Good, but who they haven’t executed, yet.
You & I are on the same page. However, I think a proposal to disarm ICE might work. Let them carry tasers, but not lethal weapons. No matter how much "experience" those guys have--& what is it? running around in the woods? paintball?--they are obviously incompetent at handling such ordinance. We really shouldn't need any more sacrifices to see that.
I think that’d be an improvement, but only a slight one. An ICE whose objective remains “maximum cruelty in maximum numbers” rather than “remove people who are actually net negative for society sorted by priority” is only made marginally better by being made to use only non-lethal weapons.
In fact, I worry that such a change could backfire by making said ICE “acceptable.”
It's clear they are not removing people in that category anymore--just people who are negative to *them*.
Yes, it would be better to have a several-point de-escalation plan; but we need to come up with something, & fast. Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good. Right now we are just wringing our hands because we don't have any ideas on how to handle this.
