The SAVE Act isn't "voter ID." Your driver's license doesn't count. 21 million Americans would lose the right to vote, and Trump says it's coming no matter what
In Nevada a few years ago they mandated that everyone had to get a real ID, and to do so we had to submit proof of citizenship including a passport or birth certificate. So how does that not count as proof of citizenship?
That’s interesting, I’m surprised you guys don’t have the ‘enhanced Real ID’ licenses then. I know 5 states have them (Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Vermont and Washington). These denote in the ID itself that they are proof of citizenship.
But yea, IF you look at your ID and it specifically says that indicates you’re a citizen, then yes, that would be a valid proof of citizenship. But again, at least to my knowledge, the vast majority of Americans, even if they have a ‘Real ID’ does not have such an ID that meets the SAVE Act’s requirement.
I suppose you can take a look at yours and see if it specifically says you’re a citizen (maybe the list has grown past the 5 states that are listed everywhere I look).
However, it doesn’t change the fact that an estimated 21 million Americans don’t currently have access to the documents required to get the Enhanced Real ID, and that they would nevertheless be disenfranchised by the law. Not to mention the law isn’t just about having an ID to register to vote, but other things like essentially killing electronic registration, purging voter rolls with very little oversight, and handing state voter information to DHS to do with it whatever they want.
And again, all research done, even by right wing groups, shows this is trying to ‘solve’ a problem that doesn’t meaningfully exist, i.e., the point is the disenfranchisement, which Republicans know will impact far more Democratic voters than Republican as those who usually do not currently have a birth certificate/passport/etc. tend to be poorer and for whom the process of getting duplicates can be something they have not taken time to navigate.
Of course the whole thing is a scam like everything they do re voting. I looked at my license and don’t see anything about citizenship. But how can it not be considered proof of citizenship if we had to submit proof of citizenship to get one? It’s one thing to go after people who don’t have proof, but I can’t see how this will fly.
That's the point right there: they make you think you have what you need, after all you have an ID you needed to prove citizenship to get, so you think "I'm good. " Then you go to vote and realize they purged you from the voter rolls because you didn't meet the requirements and now it's too late for your vote to count and they've successfully stolen the midterms between all people who couldn't/wouldn't get the docs and those who thought they were good to go.
He did take the pardon from Trump that saved him and his wife from charges of bribery, money laundering and conspiracy. Might as well be a Republican. Same votes, same crimes…
So does the save act work on men too? JD Vance was not born with that name. How about all the celebrities in movies, on talk shows, or on news shows? Are their aliases not stop they from voting too? What about hyphenated names? This could open a can of worms...
That's exactly the point. Rs tend to be wealthier and get these things taken care of (or have someone do it for them). They know that this law will negatively impact people, but in a way that benefits them on net. So, they don't care.
