Those words in the Bible aren’t just namby pamby toxic empathy for naive libs. It’s how to survive in civilization. How to build a society that works for everyone. You don’t have to be religious to believe it or benefit from it.
Exactly. People need to realize that ensuring the broad base of people have access to Healthcare, education, and opportunities is hardly a matter of benevolence or even morality. It is quite simply the difference between a society moving towards flourishment and one moving towards decay. Whether you come to that conclusion from the perspective of faith, philosophy or thermodynamics, it doesn't really matter. At the end of the day, no matter how many billions or trillions they throw at alternatives and promises, either we'll take care of the least amongst us, or we'll perish just like them. Do it because it makes you feel holy if that suits you. Do it because it makes you feel enlightened. Or do it out of self-preservation if nothing else.
It is a strange feeling I can't quite describe, but to me it sits somewhere between comfort and irony. Neoliberalism cannot survive the quest for AGI., whether it succeeds or fails. And yes, that it could spell some cataclysmic scenario may seem terrifying, but there's nothing more terrifying than perpetuating the status quo.
I know what you mean about that in-between feeling. Like when you find out something terrifying or disturbing, but you're still glad you found it out.
Every New Years I send out a prediction based on numerology (chuckle). This year's was: 2026…the Wheel of of the Year endlessly turning…what goes around comes around...there will be a return, an ending & a beginning…
That can be pretty scary. Or not. Make of it what you will.

What a great way to start off the American 250th anniversary! I just completed Ken Burn's American Revolution and in nearly 12h spun over 6 episodes several themes get addressed which are all important The internal civil war between loyalists to King George III and the "patriots" that the Brits called rebels...nowadays we call them MAGA and protestors/domestic terrorists respectively
The offshoot casualties of American's fight for independence were the Native Americans who were brutalized by the patriots losing their lands and belongings It is pretty despicable to watch Likewise the American slaves promised freedom by both the Brits and Americans who fought for each respective side lost their freedom due to the slave owner Washington and won their freedom because the Brits kept their promise that if they fought with Britain they would win their freedom at the end of the war
And for patriots who fought for their nascent country, suffered years of brutal weather and near starvation, most were left unpaid by a bankrupt new government
And had it not been for the French and Spanish military help, Washington would have lost his war of independence with Britain And now WE the People face what was a big concern for the Constitutional framers that a dictator would take over the country It’s in our American DNA to say “No Kings or Dictators”

This is terrifying. And also true. Your examples show that quite clearly.
