So, they've been taught to believe Social Security bad, so when people incorrectly claim that in 10 years there will be no Social Security left (false there will be at least ~78% payouts), or that we couldn't just fix it by lifting the caps on it or as Musk says that it's a source of some hundreds of billions of dollars in waste fraud and abuse, then your average R just swallows it right up.
Musk could probably go on TV tomorrow and claim that Social Security turns out was secretly the first crypto project ever and is therefore perfect, and virtually all the people who hate Social Security today would wake up the following day being in love with Social Security.
