So no. I mean fighting for democracy all for it. These people, no. These are people that either are convinced that liberals, Jews, people of color, and women should be subjugated. I mean some can probably claim ignorance but ffs you have a computer in your pocket, any ignorance is therefore willful. Many of them are malicious and want to burn it all down and believe libs are the devil incarnate. They are ready for the rapture and will be completely surprised when they aren't part of deliverance. Some are legitimately incapable of rational critical thinking. They don't believe water is wet or that the earth is round so arguing with them is an exercise in futility. Those never trump Republicans and conservatives that came to the light are it and there are damn few left to convince. So no, not having a conversation with these people.
The only part I disagree is that I honestly believe that a vast majority of the people on the right are quite literally in a cult, with all the psychological effects that being in a cult entail. I don't say this to absolve them of responsibility. They're certainly responsible for ending up in the cult to begin with—as you say—if for no other reason, due to willful ignorance and willingness to give into the biases that they were taught.
But here's what I think is also true. We are not going to get out of this mess without being able to pull a substantial number of them out of the cult. It sucks. We shouldn't have to do this; however, at the end of the day, I think that's what it means to be part of a Society.
In a way, it makes me think of the firefighters in LA right now running into fires to save people and their homes. We have to take inspiration from them, and muster the courage to run into the fire that is the Republican Cult that we may save some of our brothers and sisters, if for no other reason, that we may also save ourselves...
You don't need to agree with me on this 100%, but I just ask that you honestly consider what I'm suggesting and ask yourself if you see another way for us out of this mess. We're a democratic republic at the end of the day, and if we, as a democracy, end up choosing to become a fascist dictatorship, well, that's still the will of the people. I think we both agree that the people on the other side are not just going to wake up tomorrow with some realization that they're wrong, without any effort from our side. What's the other option?
