Breaking — Trump Declares "No Going Back" on Greenland
He leaked private texts from Macron and NATO's chief, posted AI propaganda, and threatened 200% tariffs on French wine.
While others stenograph, grift, or chase the next distraction—this is the news that matters and how it’s connected.
“There can be no going back.”
That’s the President of the United States, on Truth Social overnight, announcing that seizing Greenland is no longer negotiable. “Greenland is imperative for National and World Security,” Trump wrote. “On that, everyone agrees!”1
Everyone does not agree. Denmark hasn’t agreed. NATO hasn’t agreed. The people who actually live on Greenland haven’t agreed. But that’s irrelevant now. Trump has made his position clear: the territory of a NATO ally is his, and he will not be talked out of it.
To underscore the point, he leaked private text messages from world leaders.
French President Emmanuel Macron wrote to Trump seeking cooperation: “We are totally in line on Syria. We can do great things on Iran. I do not understand what you are doing on Greenland.”2 Macron proposed a G7 summit, offered to invite Ukrainians and Danes, asked for a dinner in Paris. Trump’s response was to post the message publicly—alongside AI-generated images showing the American flag planted over Greenland and Canada.¹
A source close to Macron confirmed the message was authentic. The Élysée Palace’s response: tariff threats to influence French policy are “unacceptable and ineffective.”² France has also declined Trump’s invitation to join his “Board of Peace.” Trump’s response when told: “Did he say that? Well, nobody wants him because he’s going to be out of office very soon.”¹
Trump also leaked a text from NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte—”Dear Donald,” it began—in which Rutte called himself “committed to finding a way forward on Greenland” and promised to use his Davos media appearances to highlight Trump’s work.¹ NATO’s press office declined to comment.
Dutch Foreign Minister David van Weel, asked about Trump posting private diplomatic correspondence, called it “part of the new diplomacy.”¹ World leaders now have to “take into account” that anything they say to Trump may be weaponized against them publicly.
That’s not a warning. That’s a capitulation. The baseline assumption for communicating with the American president is now: he will betray you.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen was blunt: “The American president has unfortunately not ruled out the use of military force. And therefore the rest of us cannot rule it out either.”² Macron, at Davos: “We do believe that we need more growth, we need more stability in this world, but we do prefer respect to bullies.”²
EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen described a “seismic change” requiring a “new form of European independence.”² European leaders will hold an emergency meeting Thursday.3 The EU has a 93 billion euro tariff package ready to deploy, and Macron says the EU’s never-used “Anti-Coercion Instrument”—which could restrict American access to public contracts, investments, banking, and Big Tech digital services—is now on the table.³
Russia’s Foreign Minister Lavrov watched with undisguised glee: “Greenland is not a natural part of Denmark. It was neither a natural part of Norway nor a natural part of Denmark. It is a colonial conquest.”² As Trump fractures the Western alliance, Putin’s diplomats fan the flames.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, meanwhile, urged partners to “take a deep breath” and let tensions “play out.” He called concern over Greenland “hysteria” and insisted: “I think our relations have never been closer.”³
Wall Street opened sharply lower. Gold touched record highs. U.S. Treasuries sold off. Traders are reviving talk of the “Sell America” strategy from last year’s tariff chaos.³
This is where we are: The president leaks allies’ private messages to humiliate them. He posts AI images of conquered territory. He threatens 200% tariffs on champagne. He refuses to rule out military force against a NATO member. And his Treasury Secretary calls the response “hysteria.”
That’s not dealmaking. That’s not diplomacy. That’s a protection racket.
The Call
This isn’t an isolated incident. We track stories like this using the fascism syndrome—ten indicators that a democracy is sliding into fascism—so you don’t lose the thread in the daily chaos:
Aggression as virtue: “No going back.” Military force not ruled out against allies. Tariff threats as punishment for non-compliance. Dominance is the only currency.
War on reality: AI-generated propaganda showing American flags over allied territory. Bessent calling legitimate alarm “hysteria” while markets tank. When the gaslighting is this blatant, it’s not persuasion—it’s a loyalty test.
Cult of the leader: Rutte promising to use Davos to “highlight Trump’s work.” Private diplomacy reduced to flattery. The only path forward is submission.
Consolidation of economic power: 200% tariffs on French wine. Allies’ trade access contingent on political compliance. This is how protection rackets work.
Leak allies’ secrets. Post propaganda. Threaten force. That’s not dealmaking. That’s coercion. That’s fascism.
But naming the disease is only half the job.
