When Patriots Become Traitors
Trump threatens military veterans with execution for defending the Constitution. This is what fascism looks like.
Six decorated military veterans stood in front of cameras this week. Senators Elissa Slotkin and Mark Kelly. Representatives Jason Crow, Chris Deluzio, Maggie Goodlander, and Chrissy Houlahan. They recorded a 90-second video with a simple message to U.S. service members: Uphold the Constitution. Refuse illegal orders. Donald Trump’s response? “SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH.”
Let’s be clear about what just happened. A draft dodger who faked bone spurs to avoid Vietnam just threatened decorated veterans with execution for reminding troops to follow the law. These aren’t random politicians—they’re people who actually served their country, who understand what an oath to the Constitution means. And Trump, who never served a day in his life, who mocked John McCain for being a POW, who called fallen soldiers “losers and suckers,” just called them traitors deserving of death.
This isn’t politics. This is fascism.
Stop Pretending This Is Normal
Trump didn’t just criticize these lawmakers. He didn’t just disagree with them. He called for their arrest, their trial, their execution. He reposted messages saying “HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD!!” He amplified more than a dozen posts calling for violence against sitting members of Congress—all because they reminded service members of their constitutional duty. And when his press secretary was asked about it, she doubled down, saying maybe it should be “punishable by law” to remind troops of their constitutional duty.
The Pentagon spokesperson—Trump’s own guy—said something revealing: “Our military follows orders, and our civilians give legal orders.” Not lawful orders. Not constitutional orders. Just orders. That’s the tell. That’s the moment when you realize what they’re actually building here: a military that doesn’t question, doesn’t evaluate, doesn’t think. A military that serves the man, not the country.
That’s not the American military. That’s the brownshirts.
The Inversion
Here’s what’s happening, and you need to understand it: Defending the Constitution is now “sedition.” Following your oath is now “treason.” Patriots are now traitors. And a man who tried to overthrow the government on January 6th—who stole classified documents, who extorted Ukraine, who praised dictators and mocked POWs—that man gets to decide what patriotism means. This is the endgame of fascism, the moment when words lose all meaning, when up is down, when loyalty to the country becomes betrayal of the leader.
They’re not even hiding it anymore. Stephen Miller went on Fox News and called the Democrats’ video “insurrection—plainly, directly, without question.” The same Stephen Miller who helped plan the actual insurrection on January 6th. The same administration that called that violent attack “legitimate political discourse.” Now a video reminding troops to follow the law is the real insurrection. The inversion is complete.
Ask Them Why
Every single Republican who stays silent right now—ask them why. Ask Mike Johnson why threatening veterans with death for defending the Constitution is just Trump “defining a crime.” Ask every GOP senator why a draft dodger gets to call combat veterans traitors. Ask Stephen Miller why reminding troops to refuse illegal orders is “insurrection” when Trump’s actual insurrection was just “legitimate political discourse.” Ask Pete Hegseth—who texted classified Yemen strike plans to his wife and brother on Signal—why these lawmakers are the threat to national security.
Make them answer. Because their silence is complicity. Their excuses are collaboration. And every single one of them knows it. They’re choosing to stand with a man who threatens execution over lawmakers who defend the Constitution. That’s not a passive choice. That’s not “staying out of it.” That’s picking the side of tyranny.
They Hate the Constitution
Let’s be honest about what’s happening here. They don’t love America. They love power. They don’t defend the Constitution. They fear it. Because the Constitution is the only thing standing between them and absolute authority. It’s the document that says the military serves the country, not the king. That troops swear an oath to the law, not the leader. That there are limits on executive power, checks on presidential authority, rights that cannot be violated no matter who sits in the Oval Office.
And that’s what this is really about. Trump wants a military that follows him—not the Constitution, not the law, him. He wants troops who don’t question, who don’t evaluate whether an order is lawful, who just obey. And any lawmaker—any veteran, any patriot—who reminds troops of their actual duty becomes an enemy, a traitor, someone “punishable by DEATH.” These aren’t empty words. These aren’t campaign rallies. This is the President of the United States, on the record, calling for the execution of sitting members of Congress.
This is not hyperbole. These are his words.
The Nuremberg Defense Won’t Work
Here’s what every service member needs to understand: “Just following orders” is not a defense. It didn’t work at Nuremberg. It won’t work here. The Uniform Code of Military Justice is crystal clear—you have a duty to refuse unlawful orders. Commanders have lawyers on their staffs to help them make that call. Rank-and-file troops don’t have that luxury. But the law is the law, and the principle is the same: if an order violates the Constitution, violates the law, violates basic human rights, you have not just the right but the duty to refuse it.
And when Trump orders troops to do something illegal—and he will—you will have a choice to make. Follow an illegal order and face criminal charges later, or refuse and face Trump’s wrath now. That’s the impossible position he’s putting you in, and that’s exactly why Slotkin, Kelly, Crow, Deluzio, Goodlander, and Houlahan made that video. To remind you: You have the right to say no. You have the duty to say no. And Trump threatened them with death for it.
You Are the Thin Line
If you’re in the military right now, you’re under enormous pressure. We see you. We know what you’re facing. You didn’t sign up to choose between your oath and your career, between the Constitution and the Commander-in-Chief, between doing what’s right and staying alive. But that’s where we are. And here’s the truth: You are the thin line between democracy and dictatorship.
Not politicians. Not judges. Not protesters. You. The men and women with their hands on the machinery of state violence. If you refuse illegal orders, this doesn’t work. If you stand for the Constitution, he can’t win. If you remember that your oath is to the country, not the king, we still have a chance. History will remember what you do in this moment. Your grandchildren will ask you what side you were on. Choose wisely.
You are the solution.
This Is Our Fight
The rest of us have work to do too. Defend these lawmakers—Slotkin, Kelly, Crow, Deluzio, Goodlander, Houlahan are patriots, and we need to say it loud and say it everywhere. Demand answers from every Republican who stays silent, because their silence is complicity. Support service members who are going to face impossible choices, and make sure they know we have their backs when they do the right thing. And for god’s sake, stop being polite. When they call patriots traitors, we don’t debate—we fight.
This is information warfare. This is the battle for what words mean, for whether the Constitution still matters, for whether defending your country makes you a hero or gets you hanged. And we’re losing—not because we’re wrong, not because we’re weak, but because we keep pretending this is normal. We keep acting like facts and laws and norms still matter to people who only understand power. When they go low, curbstomp them—rhetorically, of course. When they call patriots traitors, call them what they are: fascists. When they threaten death for defending the Constitution, remind everyone what tyranny looks like.
There’s more below, but first:
If work like this—documenting death threats against veterans for defending the Constitution and calling fascism what it is in real time—feels worth having in the world, please consider supporting The American Manifesto. Paid subscriptions make it possible to keep fighting when others stay silent.
Make Your Choice
You’re watching it happen in real time. A president threatening lawmakers with execution for reminding troops to follow the law. The Pentagon saying troops just need to “follow orders.” Republicans making excuses for death threats against veterans. The inversion of every value America claims to hold.
Constitution or cult. America or Trump.
There is no middle ground.
Stand with these lawmakers. Or kneel to a king.
Let’s get to work.
This is our fight.
Your Move—Turn This Into Power
Trump just threatened six decorated veterans with death for reminding troops to follow the Constitution. Republicans are either cheering or silent. The military is being positioned as a tool of personal loyalty, not national defense. This moment demands more than outrage—it demands action.
Questions for the community:
If you’re a veteran or currently serving, how does it feel watching Trump threaten other veterans with execution for defending the oath you took?
What would you ask Mike Johnson, Pete Hegseth, or your own representatives about their silence on these death threats?
What should the actual consequences be for a president who threatens lawmakers with execution for upholding the Constitution?
Have you seen this kind of threat normalization in your own community—where defending basic constitutional principles gets labeled as “sedition”?
Keep it grounded, keep it respectful, and let’s turn this into organizing power.
