One of the things I’ve been thinking about is the degree with which so many people are showing who they really are. This must be much like what happened in Germany, where many, though certainly not all, went along with the Nazis not because they were pressured but because deep inside, they represented their own internal ideology.
I think this is one thing they have got going for them: they keep counting on the rest of us not being able to reconcile the idea that our own neighbors, friends and sometimes even family members are irredeemably evil, along with the left’s tendency to be conflict averse and having the deeply held belief in the power of reformation and forgiveness. And to be clear, this isn’t everyone, but it’s definitely a large subset (I would estimate ~20%) of the Trump base, while there are many who have been thoroughly brainwashed.
I think nothing demonstrated this as clearly as the entire SCOTUS debacle with Obama and Mitch McConnel. They literally stole a SCOTUS seat by making stuff up, twice, and then the Left just threw their hands up in the air and were like “well, I guess we’re just suckers and we won’t do anything because that might require either a spine or a desire for accountability that supersedes our conflict aversion.” When in my opinion, Biden should have, on day one, declared that anyone appointed by traitor Trump, including in the Judiciary, from district judges to SCOTUS Justices, are hereby dismissed as though Trump had never existed, and when people asked with which authority he’s doing it, he should have answered: “with the same authority that McConnel stole the SCOTUS seats and Trump led an insurrection, and if you don’t like it we can find a spot for you in Gitmo.”
I also think this is a big reason why so many people have checked out of politics or straight up joined the right: they realized that of the two sides of our politics, one will consistently screw working people to help elites or spread crony Christianity, while the other side will sit back and allow them. And if that’s the case, I can understand why some people would rather sit with the Nazis and hope to get their crumbs since the alternative is being crushed while on the side that simply refuses to fight back.
Sorry this might come across like a rant, but with everything going on now, from all the scams the Trump family is running, to the Epstein coverup, to the disappearing of immigrants within the US and the blowing up of those in the Caribbean, the ravaging of the Economy, along with all the terrible, evil foreign policy, I’m honestly stunned by our complete inability to simply hold people accountable within our lives because we just don’t want conflict…
Not a rant. You were too young (or not even here?) when this started with the sainted Ronald Reagan. The amount of shirking going on was astounding. Nobody in government assumed accountability for anything, even things officially under their oversight. (That's one of the quiet parts Donald says out loud.)
