"Fucking Bitch"
While others stenograph, grift, or chase the next distraction—this is the news that matters and how it's connected.
The killer has a name. Jonathan Ross.
His own cellphone video shows the moment he shot Renee Nicole Good.1 Now we have both angles—the bystander footage we analyzed yesterday, and the killer’s POV.
What does Ross’s video show? Good sitting behind the wheel, calm. “That’s fine dude. I’m not mad at you.” Her wife, standing nearby: “Go get yourself some lunch, big boy.” Then another agent screaming: “Get out of the fucking car.” Good reverses. Turns away. Three shots.
And then someone says it: “Fucking bitch.”
That’s what they called her after they shot her. After they executed a 37-year-old mother of three who was watching out for her neighbors. After they killed a woman whose glove compartment held stuffed animals and Cheerios.
First they called her a terrorist. Now they call her a bitch. That's not anger—that's how you talk about someone who was never human to you.
Monica Hesse at the Post watched the bystander video 80 times, frame by frame.2 Her conclusion: the car only accelerated toward the officer after he fired—”propelled not by Renee’s intent to cause him harm but by the weight of her lifeless foot.”
Michael Freeman—the prosecutor who charged Derek Chauvin—says Ross isn’t immune: “He had no reason to fear for his life, he had no reason to fire his weapon, and he shouldn’t have.”3
Two videos. Frame-by-frame analysis. A prosecutor's assessment. And yet the administration is still claiming self-defense. The evidence doesn't matter. It never did. The lie is the point.
Good is at least the fifth person to die during ICE operations since Trump returned to office.³ Minneapolis schools remain closed—switching to e-learning because of ICE activity.
Rep. Eric Swalwell introduced the ICE OUT Act Thursday. His message: ”I am not going to pay masked thugs to shoot moms in the face. Period.”4
The Pope Calls It What It Is
While federal agents called Good a “fucking bitch,” Pope Leo addressed the Vatican diplomatic corps. His subject: the collapse of the international order.
“War is back in vogue and a zeal for war is spreading,” Leo said. ”The principle established after the Second World War, which prohibited nations from using force to violate the borders of others, has been completely undermined.”⁵
He didn’t name the United States. He didn’t have to.
When the moral authority of 1.3 billion Catholics is warning about American aggression, that's not geopolitical noise. That's a marker of how far we've fallen—and how clearly the world sees what we're becoming.
The same day, Trump met with oil executives to pitch Venezuela investment. Public Citizen’s Tyson Slocum called it what it is: “violent imperialism” designed to “hand billionaires control over Venezuela’s oil.”5 Sen. Adam Schiff was blunter: “It became very clear in the aftermath of this military operation that this was really about oil.“⁵
The oil companies aren’t buying it—literally. ExxonMobil’s CEO called Venezuela “uninvestable.” ConocoPhillips is still owed $12 billion from the last time their assets were seized. When Trump joked “Good write off,” the CEO shot back: “It’s already been written off.”6
This is the tell. When even the intended beneficiaries of imperialism won't touch it, you're not running a competent extraction operation. You're running a vanity project with American lives and global stability as the price of admission.
Trump doesn’t care. He told the New York Times the U.S. will be running Venezuela for “much longer” than a year. His words: “We’re going to be using oil, and we’re going to be taking oil.”⁵
Meanwhile...
Greenland: At the same oil executive meeting, Trump threatened the “hard way” if Denmark won’t sell. His justification for dismissing their sovereignty? “The fact that they had a boat land there 500 years ago doesn’t mean that they own the land.”7
Obamacare: 17 Republicans joined Democrats to pass a three-year extension of ACA subsidies, 230-196—rebuffing their own leadership.8 It’s destined to die in the Senate. But Rep. Derrick Van Orden’s explanation matters: “I have a bunch of my constituents that are depending on these programs, and I’m not going to leave them hanging.” Are cracks starting to form?
There’s more below, but first: If work like this—naming the killers, translating the Pope’s warning, tracking the pattern from Minneapolis to Caracas—feels worth having in the world, please consider supporting The American Manifesto. Paid subscriptions make it possible to keep watching when watching is the last thing anyone wants to do.
The Pattern
We’ve been mapping this administration against the fascism syndrome—ten indicators that a democracy is backsliding into fascism. Today:
Normalization of political violence: Federal agents execute a citizen, then call her a “fucking bitch.” Fifth known death during ICE operations since Trump returned to office.
Identity-based scapegoating: Good labeled a “domestic terrorist” for watching out for immigrant neighbors. The target was never crime—it was identity.
War on reality: Administration claims self-defense. Video shows Good’s wheels turning away from the agent. Hesse’s analysis: the car moved toward him only “propelled by the weight of her lifeless foot.”
Aggression as virtue: Trump threatens Greenland “the hard way.” Admits U.S. will be “taking oil” from Venezuela. Pope Leo: “War is back in vogue.”
Consolidation of economic power: Oil executives summoned to the White House to divide Venezuela’s resources. Schiff: “This was really about oil.”
“Fucking bitch.” That’s what power sounds like when it answers only to itself.
This isn’t law enforcement. This isn’t foreign policy. This is Fascism. If you want to understand the machine—and how to dismantle it—start here: The Freedom Illusion.

Video does not show the SUV making contact with Ross.
Monica Hesse, “I can’t stop dissecting the ICE shooting video“, Washington Post, January 8, 2026.
Frame-by-frame analysis of the bystander video, watching “at least 80 times.” Hesse concludes the SUV only accelerated toward the agent after he fired—”propelled not by Renee’s intent to cause him harm but by the weight of her lifeless foot.” Calls the footage “a Rorschach test for how afraid you are for the country.”

It definitely is undeniably fascism now. Heather Cox Richardson, an excellent historian and not radical, laid it out yesterday. What’s happening now checks all the boxes.
NBC Nightly News aired that video on tonight’s broadcast and said that “they would be showing it in it’s entirety, frame by frame” - the audio was edited to exclude the language from the agent who said “get the fuck out of the car” as well as the expletive by the agent who shot Renee. It also blurred that last section where he shot her from the side of the car before her foot hit the accelerator.
